CAXACORI STUDIO’s SHIRINGA BIOLEATHER is a material designed with organic latex from wild Amazonian trees that contributes to the conservation of the Amazon and the empowerment of native communities.
Sustainable shiringa harvesting is an ancestral practice that consists of collecting latex from shiringa trees, without cutting them down and respecting their cycles, and with a modern formulation and processes, converting it into a resistant, soft and flexible bio-leather that meets the characteristics of the fashion industry.
Through the sustainable collection of shiringa latex, native families obtain economic income from the forest without depredating their forest, generating an environmental and social impact.
The Amazon rainforest is rich in biological diversity, but has two major problems: deforestation and poverty. In Peru alone in 2023, 150,398 hectares of Amazon forest have been deforested due to illegal logging, illegal mining, drug trafficking and inadequate agricultural practices. Ninety percent of deforestation in Peru is due to inadequate planting (source: Minam). In addition, 73.4% of native forest communities live in a state of poverty.
Faced with this problem, we saw an alternative: The Shiringa.
The Shiringa tree, or rubber tree, is a tree that grows wild in various parts of the Amazon and has a liquid called latex in its interior, which when extracted in an artisanal and sustainable way – that is to say, without cutting down the trees – is converted into a bio-leather. This practice has been carried out for generations by the indigenous communities of the Amazon rainforest, experts in the sustainable extraction of latex in harmony with the seasonal and life cycles of the trees.
They do it by means of incisions in the bark of the tree, where only what is necessary is extracted so as not to harm the tree. It is mixed with the CAXACORI STUDIO formula and spread on a cotton base. It is pigmented with various natural fibers and in this way a resistant and soft bio-leather is obtained.
The origin of deforestation is extreme poverty and lack of opportunities. The depredation of our Amazon not only destroys the habitat of many species and contributes to global warming, but also corrupts the spirit of union between man and nature, bringing vices, illegality, exploitation, drug trafficking, prostitution, violence and imbalance.
Caxacori Studio works with Amazonian families that collect shiringa latex, generating a business opportunity that respects the environment and people, offering Amazonian families the alternative of obtaining economic income from their environment without cutting down trees.
We are governed by the principles of fair trade in a responsible, ethical and transparent manner, seeking the development of communities that collect and produce wild rubber.

Shiringa’s bio-leather designed by the Awajún native communities and Caxacori Studio is a material that meets the technical specifications of the fashion industry. For this purpose we have an in-house laboratory with engineers specialized in biomaterials, and we also work with external laboratories that measure and validate the technical characteristics of our bioleathers.
by native Amazonian communities and a modern process in biomaterials laboratories. Together we managed to design a new material based on resistant biological raw materials and with characteristics of circular economy and biodegradability. It is born from a search for identity through materials, to tell our history and our present through new values and aesthetic and tactile experiences. It is a transversal proposal that contains tradition, sensations, emotions, sustainability, science and future.
In Caxacori Studio we work with artisans, natives, engineers, foresters, NGO’s, designers, to propose new ways of relating to nature and clothing.
“For us it is fundamental that a material that has a sustainable origin or a positive impact for the planet, must be resistant and meet the technical standards demanded by the fashion industry.”
In Caxacori Studio we pigment shiringa bio-leather with fibers from food industry and agricultural waste with the principles of circular economy: ecological, resistant and vegan. An environmentally friendly alternative to 100% synthetic leather of animal origin.
Caxacori bio-leather is a resistant and very soft material that meets the technical characteristics required by the fashion industry: abrasion, flexion, adhesion and resistance and resistance to rubbing or color fastness. We do not use PVC, we do not use toxic inputs.

SHIRINGA, a short film about fashion that regenerates the Amazon. The documentary shows the work of our shiringa women from the Awajún indigenous people of the Peruvian Amazon, a native community that manufactures shiringa biohair, while defending their land against deforestation for cattle ranching and mining linked to these harmful materials they work to replace.
SHIRINGA is a Collective Fashion Justice documentary directed and produced by its founder, Emma Hakansson.
