Shiringa Bioleather

A skin that conserves Amazonian forests and empowers native communities

SHIRINGA BIOLEATHER is a material designed with organic latex from wild Amazonian trees that contributes to the conservation of the Amazon and the empowerment of native communities.

Sustainable shiringa harvesting is an ancestral practice that consists of collecting latex from shiringa trees, without cutting them down and respecting their cycles, and with a modern formulation and processes, converting it into a resistant, soft and flexible bio-leather that meets the characteristics of the fashion industry.

Deforestation and poverty are the biggest problems in the amazon

The Amazon is a wonderful place, but it has two major problems: deforestation and poverty. Cattle ranching is responsible for 80 percent of all deforested land in the Amazon and 41 percent of all tropical deforestation worldwide. The year 2023 have been deforested in Peru 150,398 hectares of forest, either by the same livestock, illegal logging, illegal mining, drug trafficking, but one of the main reasons is inadequate agriculture, according to the Ministry of Environment of Peru 90% of deforestation in Peru is given by the clearing of forests for crops, and this is closely linked to the poverty of native communities in the area amounting to 73.45%.

In CAXACORI STUDIO we seek to contribute to solve the problem of deforestation, promoting the sustainable use of the forest based on the organized collection and ecological processing of the latex of the Shiringa tree, which allows native families to obtain income from the forest without depredating it.

It is a very ancestral technique where the trees are not cut down, but the latex necessary for the tree to stay alive and regenerate is extracted. We then transform it into shiringa bioleather, a resistant and soft material.

The sustainable collection of shiringa latex allows native families to earn economic income from the forest without depleting their trees, generating a real and traceable environmental and social impact.

We work with 59 native families that obtain economic income from the forest without deforesting it

At CAXACORI STUDIO we work with Amazonian families of the Awajun ethnic group, who collect latex from the shiringa tree, also known as rubber tree, generating a business opportunity that respects the environment and people, offering Amazonian families the alternative of obtaining economic income from the forest without cutting down the trees.

This work is carried out under the principles of fair trade in a responsible, ethical and transparent manner, for which we create alliances with local governments, private institutions and state agencies that protect the Amazon forest and with which we work together to encourage the development of the Peruvian jungle.

Where do we work?

We work in the TUNTANAIN COMMUNAL RESERVE, in the Amazon region of Peru. We have a conservation agreement with the Awajún indigenous communities and SERNANP (National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State), which is an agency of the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment. This agreement is a commitment to work together to restore the Amazon rainforest and improve the quality of life of indigenous communities.

The TUNTANAIN COMMUNAL RESERVE is an area protected by the state and the native communities. It is located in the northern jungle of Peru and covers an area of 94,967.68 hectares. We are currently working with six Awajún indigenous communities in the area who protect their forest by working with the shiringa.

Process

This practice has been carried out for generations by the indigenous communities of the Amazon rainforest, experts in the sustainable extraction of latex in harmony with the seasons and the life cycles of the trees.

They do it by making incisions in the tree's bark, from which only what is necessary is extracted to avoid damaging it. It is mixed with the CAXACORI STUDIO formula and spread over a cotton base. It is pigmented with various natural fibers, thus obtaining a resistant and soft bi-leather.
